Manually updating a wordpress blog to a new version is pain and if you have multiple blogs then it is serious problem. Wordpress releases so many versions of the project so I was looking for a plugin that can help me out seriously. I decided to go for Wordpress Automatic Upgrade plugin. I have successfully updated by CG blog within one minute. I wanted to share the process (which is very easy) with my readers. So let’s get started.
Wordpress will tell you every time you login to your admin account that a new version of wordpress is available, Please update now. Read this post on manual wordpress update process. Download the plugin from here.
Upload it to plugin directory and activate the plugin. Once you activate this, you will see one more notification printed over wordpress’ default notification. Click on where Click Here is written.

Automatic upgrading process will start. First plugin will run some preliminary checks of your server. Next task is to backup your files. You can skip this process, which is not recommended. Click on the Click Here link shown below in green box.

In next step you will be asked to download the compressed backup file. Click on the DOWNLOAD IT URL to save a copy on your local machine. Next it will show you options for backing up your database. Click on next task url.

Core tables will be always selected for backup. Select additional tables from right column to add to database backup file. Select all the tables and take backup.

Click on DOWNLOAD IT link to download the database backup to your desktop. Currently you can install English version only. Click on Lets GO button. Plugin will fetch latest.zip from wordpress site and will install the latest files.

Before it starts upgrading process, it will put your site on maintenance mode which is appropriate.

Check your blog url in browser and it will show you that your site is undergoing maintenance.

Next step plugin will deactivate all your plugins except wordpress automatic upgrade plugin.

Next task upgrades all the installation files. Click on click here to go to next task.

Now if your database needs an upgrade as well, click on CLICK HERE COMPLETE THE FINAL STEP. A new window will popup, click on the Update Wordpress button.

In next step it will re-activate all the plugins that were active earlier.

Next you have to login to your wordpress account.

You will be congratulated after login for successful upgrade.

Next you will be given one more chance for downloading your file and database backup. Download them if you haven’t downloaded yet. Once you done, click on the Clean Up button for some housekeeping.

You can also download the log file from there. Now you can see that Version 2.6 is flashed in the footer area.

It is a great plugin for hassle free wordpress update. Currently version 1.2 is available, here is the list of features that are coming in version 1.3.
- A better user interface including verbose output where users will see what’s being done in real time. Ability to skip certain tasks or run tasks on demand, so users can run file backups, database backups etc selectively.
- Ability for users to choose the language of WordPress they want to download from.
- Complete Internationalization support.
- Cleanup of code to make WPAU more faster.
Give it a try.
