Falloff map is one of the vital maps available in the max. In this tutorial we will create an x-ray material using falloff map. Open up your material editor and select an empty slot. Rename it as x-ray. Click on the standard button and select blend from the list. Discard the old material. Select the material two slot. Change the diffuse color to whitish blue RGB (200, 200, 248). Change specular color to pure white (255, 255, 255). Change specular level to 106 and glossiness to 48. In the extended property rollout set fall off to in. Type to additive and amount to 100. I will explain those parameters little later. Now select the material one slot, rename it to black and change diffuse color to pure black. Raise specular level to 35 and Glossiness to 48. Click on the mask button and select falloff map. Apply this material to your test model and render the scene. Here we go, our x-ray material is ready. Now play with the falloff parameters in the mask map and you will have some interesting results. Like change
the falloff curve. Render your scene.
